Around 250 runners converged on a sunny Houston last Saturday afternoon, to compete in the annual George Cummings Road Relay race around the village and surrounding roads.

Kilbarchan Athletic Club ladies won the Ladies event and with it, regained the Renfrewshire County Road Relay title. The County Championships covers the historical county area, which includes parts of south side Glasgow, Eastwood and Inverclyde, as well as Renfrew District area.

The  trio of Christina Rankin, Iona Miller and Laura Stark finished over a minute ahead of Inverclyde AC, their time for 3 times round the 2.7mile circuit,  47 minutes 7 seconds. There was also a good effort from the Kilbarchan B team of Jennifer Rooney, Holly Thompson and Julia Harris which finished 6th overall but 3rd in the County competition to win Bronze medals.

The Mens race for the George Cummings Trophy was won by Shettleston Harriers, time 52 minutes 34 seconds for their 4 lap event, with Inverclyde AC 2nd and Glenpark Harriers 3rd. The young Kilbarchan quartet of Callum Matthews, Conor Thomson, Euan Trout and Sam McNair, finished 5th overall and picked up Bronze medals for being 3rd in the County behind the Inverclyde and Glenpark teams.

Elsewhere, Gemma Rankin had a fine run in the Berlin Marathon, finishing in a time of 2 hours 44 minutes 36 seconds.
