Elderslie athlete Callum Hawkins was delighted to have his selection for the Commonwealth Games confirmed last week. The Kilbarchan harrier,, who will compete in the 10000metres, joins his brother Derek and also Hayley Haining, both of whom will represent Scotland in the marathon at the Games.
Track and Field athletics is at the height of the season at the moment and last Sunday, the Scottish National relay Championships were staged at Pitreavie with Kilbarchan Athletic Club having a number of successes.
In the 3x800metres events, the under 17 girls Kerry MacAngus, Laura Stark and Jemma Reekie, the same trio who last year won the under 16s title, dominated their event, winning by around 140 metres in a club record time of 6 minutes 56.51 seconds, a 10 second improvement on the previous best. The under 13 girls, Alisha Sivell, Leona Murray and Eilidh Gibson, almost pulled off a major surprise, finishing a very close 2nd in their event and the time of 7.36.26, smashed the club record, beating the previous best by more than 30 seconds. There were bronze medals for 2 of the boys teams, u15s (James Toal, Ross Wallace, Jake Scott) time 6.51.53 and under 17 boys (Ewan McKerral, Euan Trout and Cameron Dickson), time 6.12.59. .
The Scottish Schools Hammer Championships also produced some local medallists.
Heather Fawcett (Johnstone HS) won Silver in the girls Group C Hammer; Andrew Costello (Castlehead HS) won Silver in the boys group C Hammer and Cameron Stark (St Columbas School) won Bronze in the boys group D Hammer.
At a more local level, Kilbarchan Athletic Club staged its annual 5mile handicap race along the cycle track, from Bridge of Weir towards Kilmacolm and back. Max McFarlane won the Trophy, his 3rd success in this event. Fastest scratch time was Ewan McKerral in 28 minutes 1 second.
