Callum Hawkins continued his progress as a world class athlete when he finished 2nd in The Great Scottish Run ½ marathon last Sunday and retaining his Scottish ½ marathon title. The 22 year old from Elderslie finished just 150 metres behind Uganda’s Moses Kipsiro and his time of 62 minutes 42 seconds, puts him 3rd in the Scottish all time list. Callum finished ahead of several world class distance runners, including 2013 World Cross Country champion, Kenya’s Japheth Korir.
There was also a good effort by brother Derek Hawkins who represented Scotland in the Commonwealth Games Marathon, coming back to form and finishing 8th in 66.24.
The brothers were using the Glasgow event as part of their preparation for the Frankfurt Marathon on 26th October which will be Callum’s first Marathon and for them, a target will be the Rio Olympics Marathon qualifying time of 2 hours 14 minutes.
As well as the Hawkins boys, Kilbarchan Athletic had a large number of runners competing in the ½ marathon and in the 10K and also inYoung athletes 3K races with 13 year old Eilidh Gibson winning the Girls race in 9 minutes 56 sconds.
This coming Sunday, the West District Cross Country relays are at Hamilton race course.
