Callum Hawkins competed in the Frankfurt Marathon last Sunday, looking for the 2 hours 14 minutes qualifying time for the Olympics Games in Brazil next year and the 23 year old from Elderslie achieved his target, finishing 12th, top Brit, against world class opposition, with a time of 2 hours 12 minutes 17 seconds. This puts Callum 7th on the Scottish all time list, a fine effort on his marathon debut. Callum’s brother Derek, had also intended to run at Frankfurt but had to withdraw because of a foot Injury.
One of Scotland’s major Cross Country events took place last Saturday with the National Relay Championships at Cumbernauld and for Kilbarchan Athletic Club, the boys were the stars, remarkably teams finishing first and third from more than 100 starting teams.
The A team of Jack Patton Andrew MacAngus and Sam McNair had a winning time of 27 minutes 7 seconds with the B team of Lewis Hannigan, Michael Simson and Conor Thomson finishing in 27.52 to take Bronze medals. The strength in depth of the Kilbarchan squad was emphasised with their C team od Cameron Hunter, David McNair and Aidan Comerford finishing 11th.
The girls team of Alisha Sivell, Eilidh Gibson and Kerry MacAngus, just missed the medals finishing a close 4thand their B team of Kimberley Gilchrist, Leona Murray and Rona Tytler were 14th, again from more than 100 starting teams
Kilbarchan Men’s quartet of Callum Matthews, Gavin McArdle, Euan Trout and Scott McLardie, average age under 20, did well to finish 12th from 110 starting teams and Ladies team of Christina Rankin, Jemma Reekie and Julia Harris were 15th.
