Race Report on Edinburgh Marathon Website

The first of the two-day event in the capital saw reigning Australian 10k road champion Harry Summers, 24, set a new course record for the 10k racing to the finish line in just 31 minutes and 09 seconds beating Edinburgh AC runner Bryan Mackie’s previous time by just under 3 minutes.

Harry said: “The previous 10k record was fast but I’m pleased I beat it. I sat back in the lead group for most of the race leaving them to play cat and mouse but then it came to the downhill and I smashed it”.

Harry will be competing in the 10,000 event in Glasgow 2014 added: “I’m in good shape for the Commonwealth Games and this was a great lead race ahead of it”.

Derek Hawkins, 25, Kilbarchan AAC, from just outside Paisley finished second in 31 minutes and 13 seconds. Derek is selected for the Glasgow 2014 Marathon and said: “I’m happy with my race. Running with Harry was a great experience. I had the lead uphill but when it came to the downhill he took off. I’ve never seen anyone go like that. “

Talking ahead of Glasgow 2014 he added: “I’m in a decent place ahead of the Commonwealth Games”.
