Callum Matthews won his first Senior Kilbarchan Cross Country Championship at Milliken Estate last Sunday, finishing well clear of Conor McNulty, with last year’s winner David Mackintosh, in 3rd place. Conditions were wet, with underfoot conditions very heavy, as Callum, from Elderslie, led from the start over the 9K course, finishing around 100metres ahead, to win the historic Challenge Cup in a time of 31 minutes 3 seconds.
Alan Craig won the over 40s award ahead of John Kynaston.
Ewan McKerral won the under 17 boys 6K race in 21.19 and Conor Thomson the under 15 boys 4K race in 13.15, ahead of Sam McNair. Under 11 boys 1500m winner was Fraser Scott ahead of Charlie McFadyen and Finlay Gray.
Rebeca Fortes Martin won the Women’s 6K race in 27.11 while Laura Stark won the under 15 girls 4K race in 13.32 ahead of Rona Tytler. Under 13 girls 3K winner was Kim Crawford timed at 12.14, ahead of Eilidh Gibson and Leona Murray while Alisha Sivell was 1st for the under 11 girls, ahead of Kimberley Gilchrist and Sheila McLean.
Club officials are grateful to Mrs McIntyre and to Mr Craig, for making the land available for the races to be staged over the traditional course.
The Kilbarchan club also had a number of competitors at the Scottish Schools Indoor Championships at the Emirates Arena last week with fine performances for Laura Stark (St Columbas School), who was 2nd in the under 16s 1500m and from Jemma Reekie (Garnock Academy), 3rd in the over 16s 800m while Conor Thomson (Gleniffer HS) was 3rd in the under 16 boys 1500m. Other finalists included Kerry MacAngus and Rona Tytler (u16s 1500m), also Victoria Cleer and Erin Campbell (60m Hurdles)
And at the British Championships at Sheffield, Kilbarchan record holder Jack Lochans, was close to his best, clearing 2.07m in the High Jump.
