Secretary’s Report for the Annual General Meeting of Kilbarchan Amateur Athletic Club Held at the Tweedie Halls, Wednesday 24th September 2014
The past year 2013-14 has been full of drama, excitement and sadness.
The Commonwealth Games was the goal for three of our athletes; Derek Hawkins finished in a fine ninth place and first Scot in the men’s marathon, in fact the first British athlete, in a time of 2 hours 14 minutes 15 seconds, just outside his best. Hailey Haining was delighted to have an opportunity in the women’s marathon, finishing in 13th place; 2nd Scot, in a time of 2.40.40. In the men’s 10,000 metres final Callum Hawkins finished 20th in a times of 29.12.12.
In the run up to the Games, many of our members were nominated and had the honour of carrying the Queen’s Baton in Renfrewshire on the 17th July, ending the day with an evening celebration sponsored by Renfrewshire Council at the Lagoon Paisley.
At the Paisley 10K Sunday 31 August, best placed was Euan Gillham, in 4th place in a time of 31.38. Kilbarchan dominated most of the other awards including Gemma Rankin winning the Womens race in 35.25 and the club winning both Men and Women team awards. It was a very young Mens team including Euan, along with Russell Mountford and Callum Matthews, all under 20 while for the women, Gemma was well backed up by Natalie Sharp and Maica Suarez.
In the 3K event, Sam McNair, won ahead of Andrew MacAngus with Jake Scott, 3rd and for the girls, first home was Kerry MacAngus with Leona Murray 2nd and Alisha Sivell 3rd.
Elsewhere, a few athletes travelled to Bedford to compete in the English Championships.
Jemma Reekie, Scottish under 17s 800m champion continued her fine form with an excellent 2nd place. In the under 15s age group. Andrew Costello won Silver in the Hammer, with a club record throw of 51.83metres.
Our field athletes also had a good season with personal bests:-
High Jump – Jack Lochans won silver with a jump of 2.11 metres at the Emirates Stadium in the Scottish Athletics Indoor League.
Hammer – Heather Fawcett U15 had a superb throw of 44.07 metres at the Pitreavie Trophy Meeting.
Hammer – U13 Kirsty Costello broke the club record with a throw of 33.23 metres at the Final Fling at Livingston.
At the Home International Combined Events in Manchester, Andrew Murphy was in top form, finishing 3rd in the Decathlon, with a Kilbarchan club record total of 6440 points which included a Shot Putt 12.40m, Sprint Hurdles 15.71sec, Long Jump 6.20m.
Tony Daffurn in the Triple Jump with a win of 15.54 metres, this was a BP and club record but wind assisted so not a formal record.
Javelin – Newcomer to the club Bobby Crossan U17 with a PB throw of 45.42 metres at the Scottish U13 U17 Championships at Aberdeen.
We had good results in the Scottish National Cross Country Championships in February, in very muddy condition. 1st Callum Hawkins 37.41. Snr Women won team bronze. Laura Stark was 3rd in the U15 girls race and the U13 Boys won team bronze. At the Junior Home International in Ireland on 20 September, there were bronze medals for the U16 Girls with Scottish Champion Laura Stark the best-placed Scot, at fourth and only 13 seconds adrift of a podium place, and Rona Tytler, in only her 3rd hill race 14th (2nd scot).
Success also achieved in Ultra Running and Hill Running. Steven Hill finishing 3rd in the Glenmore 12 Hour Trail Race. Congratulations to David Mackintosh, Steven Hill and Norman Groves finishing 5th in the West Highland Relays (Scrambled Legs) Sat 21 Jun. Noanie Heffron finished 2nd female the “Devil o’ the Highlands 43 mile footrace and at the weekend finished 3rd in the Self Trancendence 24 hour track race covering the remarkable distance of 132 miles 406 yards.
John Kynaston competed in the Hardmoors 60 which was the final race in the Hardmoors Grand Slam, overall results gave John a superb 2nd place.

The Club and coaches also won awards. Jason Pender received the Renfrewshire Sports Official of the year and Robert Hawkins received the Renfrewshire Performance Coach of the year. The Club received the prestigious Podium Award from Scottish Athletics.
Sadness this year with the death of one of our senior coaches, Derek Parker who was a stalwart of the club.
We have again received a generous gift from Ann McGarva and West Collage Scotland (Reid Kerr College).
My thanks go to the committee and all volunteers for all their help and support over the last year.
