There were some fine performances by local young athletes at the Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships at Irvine’s Beach Park last Saturday.
The Schools event is one of the biggest on the winter calendar and hundreds of youngsters took part over the undulating course, not made any easier with the blustery wind.
Laura Stark (St Columbas School) continued her remarkable success story in this event by winning the girls 15 to 17 age group, having in the previous 2 years, won the under 14 and 14 to 15 age group titles. Laura made the pace from the start, stretching out the field of near 100 runners, eventually winning by 30 metres in 18 minutes 12 seconds.
Cameron Corrigan (Gleniffer HS) exceeded expectations when he won the boys under 14 race in 12 minutes 31econds. Cameron took on the lead around half way and kept it going for a brilliant victory.
Other top 10 results included Rona Tytler (Gryffe HS) 5th in the 14-15 girls race, Kerry MacAngus (Gryffe HS) 9th in the 15-17 girls race, Ewan McKerral and Euan Trout (both Gryffe HS), 7th and 8th in the 15-17 age boys race and Callum Matthews (Castlehead HS), 6th in the over 17s boys race ..
This weekend, the Scottish Junior Road Race Championships are at Riccarton in Edinburgh with places at stake for the London mini marathon next month.
Also, the Alloa ½ marathon and the Clydebank 5K road race, both popular events with local runners.
