Report on Scottish Athletics web site ..

Ross Houston has staked his claim for a Glasgow 2014 place with a superb performance in the Frankfurt Marathon.
The Central AC athlete posted a PB of 2.18.28 in Germany to get inside the 2.19 being asked of Scottish men.
Hayley Haining and Joasia Zakrzewski joined Houston in posting a qualifying times under the 2.40 being asked of Scottish women for the Commonwealth Games.

Kilbarchan AAC veteran Haining was at 2.36.40 – faster than she ran in the London Marathon earlier in the year. And Zakrzewski, from Dumfries, dipped under the target with 2.39.15 to stake her claim for Glasgow 2014.

All three performances drew amazing support on our Facebook channel and Twitter feed as the athletics community in Scotland revelled in a great weekend.

For Central stalwart Houston it was a breakthrough moment in a 24-hour period which saw his club win three National titles at the Relays and then claim the Off Track Club of the Year award for 2013.

Ross, remember, went desperately close to the qualifying standard at the London Marathon when there was a chip timing issue.

Congratulations to all three athletes, coaches and their families on pushing the marathon barriers towards Glasgow 2014.

Edinburgh’s Neil Renault wasn’t too far away, either, with 2.21.47 while Kilbarchan’s Gemma Rankin was similarly close to the women’s standard at 2.42.34. Central’s John Newsom ran 2.34.17.
