The cross country season got under way last Saturday, with the West District Relay Championships at Kilmacolm and Kilbarchan Athletic Club had a successful day, winning the Women’s title and finishing 2nd in the Men’s event.

The trio of Elspeth Curran, Kerry MacAngus and Jemma Reekie, ran strongly all the way to win their 3 lap race in 43 minutes, 51 seconds, with Jemma having the fastest time of the day of 13.55 for the 4K circuit.  The Kilbarchan B team of Elaine Eadie, Holly Thomson and Jennifer Rooney did well to finish 7th and Kilbarchan were also 3rd in the over 40s category, the team of Julia Wylie, Caroline Cochran and Sharon Hastie , 12th overall from 40 starting teams, in a time of 52.09.

Shettleston Harriers won the Men’s 4 stage race in 48minutes 47 seconds with the Kilbarchan quartet of Ewan McKerral, Callum Hawkins, Scott MacAulay and Callum Matthews, 2nd in 49.53. Olympic marathon star and Glasgow ½ marathon winner Callum Hawkins, had the fastest time of the day of 11 minutes 8 seconds. The Kilbarchan B team also performed well, the quartet of Graham Evans, Scott McLardie, Conor Thomson and Sam McNair finishing 10th.

79 teams started in the girls race won by Giffnock North, with the Kilbarchan team of Rachel Muir, Alisha Sivell and Leona Murray  7thand their B team of Louise Hastie, Laine Alemu and Libby Sutherland also well to the fore finishing 10th . The boys race was won by Shettleston Harriers, with the Kilbarchan team of Ross Hastie, David McNair and Andrew MacAngus, 11th ..

This coming Sunday, the Renfrewshire County relay Championships are being staged at Bellahouston Park, the historical county area including Inverclyde and Eastwood areas , parts of Glasgow Southside, as well as Paisley district.
