Inter Counties Fell/Hill Running Championships

Published by kilbarchan Web on

Scottish hill runners (by birth, parentage or minimum nine-months residency) have the opportunity of representing their district at this year’s Inter Counties Fell/Hill Running Championships which are being held at Witton Park, on the outskirts of Blackburn, on Sunday 18 May.

The course comprises mainly hilly woodland trails and passes over the summit of Billinge Hill, the high point of the park.
The running is fairly good underfoot, not unlike what you’d find on the ‘urban’ hills in Scotland such as Corstorphine Hill.

So our scottishathletics hill running district reps are looking for athletes capable of finishing within 15 percent for men and 40 percent for women of the male winner at a championship standard hill race, for example the Carnethy 5.

They will also consider those with a strong cross country background (top 40 at the National Cross Country) who may be interested in making the transition to mountain running.

Each district team comprises four senior men and four senior women, though teams may have five runners if an under 23 (age on race day) athlete is included. The first three athletes count for a team. The senior race is open to athletes born in 1995 or earlier.

If you are interested in taking part in this event, then please contact your district rep by Monday 21 April at the latest (the teams require to be pre-entered).

Contacts are as follows:

Central : Alayne Finlay (alaynefinlay@yahoo.co.uk)

East : Helen Bonsor (hbonsor@hotmail.com)

North : Kyle Greig (kyletherunner@hotmail.com)

West : Kenny Richmond (kenny.richmond@ntlworld.com)

There is also a junior event for those Under 18 (born in 1996 or 1997) and Under16 (born in 1998 or 1999). Please contact the district reps for more information if you’re interested in taking part in the junior event.

The Senior Inter Counties races will be one of the main events from which the Scottish teams will be selected from for the Senior Home International at the UK European Mountain Running Trial at Whinlatter on 14 June.
Note: the Inter Counties event is also open for athletes to enter who do not make the District team.
